Our original building was built in 1895. This year and the initials of one of the original craftsmen who built the structure can be seen hand stamped by nail-head on the back of the basement stairs.
The building was purchased from Mrs. Mary Marshall in 1956, by Walter and Gloria (Roux) Deputat. Over the next 20 years Walter and Gloria made significant changes aimed at modernizing “The Marshall House” into a funeral home.
One major expansion came in 1972 when a new wing was added, which ran the length of the building along Dewey Street. During this time, the entire building was covered with bricks. The bricks were purchased from the demolition of the Belcher Building at Tewksbury Hospital. More than 52,000 bricks were hand cleaned by Walter and a few of his relatives and friends during a three year period. These bricks have become a signature look of the funeral home ever since.
We offer a private arrangement rooms featuring both a casket display area and urn and cremation products. The behind the scenes areas of the funeral home are both functional and modern but also small and purpose minded, our belief being the funeral home itself should be for the public.
Over the years we have added fire alarms, security alarms, security cameras and protection and emergency lighting. Currently we are fully accessible from a ramp in the rear and are equipped with modern handicapped accessible restrooms to meet the needs of all visitors. While working to maintain a mid century modern aesthetic and keep the building modern in it’s function we have retrofitted a building that is over 100 years old with central air conditioning, internet connectivity and custom flat screens to meet the needs of today’s families. We continue to replace and change everything in the building as the passing of time virtually mandates this. One thing remains however, the focus of our facility is on the bereaved. Our rooms are designed to allow people to freely circulate, to visit and spend quality time with the family. Our flexibility and size allows us to handle extremely large crowds or small families with a degree of intimacy.
Currently our facility is optimized to serve one family at a time. We have the space to have more than one service at a time, but in a post pandemic world and in accordance with the Town of Tewksbury, our pledge is to only serve one family at a time to allot for safety and privacy. Our internal size and building organization also allows your guests to wait inside, out of the elements, regardless of the number of visitors you expect. In 2021-22 our parking lot has more than doubled with the addition of a large off street parking are immediately adjacent to the funeral home.
As our community continues to grow, we look to the future with plans for internal expansion of our public areas including a new fully accessible entranceway on the Main Street side of the building to make getting in and out of our funeral home more convenient. Our objective is to continue to provide clean and comfortable, not ostentatious, surroundings. We realize that no one ever wants to go to a funeral home, it is something that one is compelled to do out of love or respect for someone who has touched their life. The goal with our facility is always to make that process easy for all walks of life.
